Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 28.01.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Locally unstable conditions. Unstable wind slabs may be found at higher elevations and naturally released avalanches are possible where wind loading is greatest. Wet avalanches are also possible at lower elevations in the morning.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 27. January 2023

Mountain weather

Friday 27. January 2023

30 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the southwest during renoon. -2 °C to 4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 28. January 2023

10 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l Saturday night. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to gale from the west during the evening. -5 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
